SAU and MHS Sports Update

The Magnolia High School basketball teams closed out the regular season at home Friday night against El Dorado.

In the girls’ game, Magnolia had a 22 to 21 lead at the half. Neither team played many of their starters in the second half, and El Dorado came out on top 38 to 24. The Lady Panthers finished the regular season at 10 and 6 in conference games, 13 and 9 overall. The Lady Wildcats are 8 and 6, and 16 and 8.

In the boys’ game, the Panthers surprised the Wildcats by keeping the game close all night. El Dorado emerged with a 3-point victory, 57 to 54. Greg Martin led Magnolia with 20 points and Trey Davis scored 18. The Panthers ended the regular season with a 7 and 9 conference record, and 10 and 11 overall. El Dorado improved to 15 and 1, and 23 and 4.

The 5A South Conference Tournament begins Monday at Watson Chapel High School. Both Magnolia teams play Tuesday. The Lady Panthers face De Queen at 3:30 Tuesday, and the Panthers play White Hall at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday. You can hear both games live on Magnolia’s Country 99.1 and online at MagnoliaRadio.com.

The SAU basketball teams play their final home games of the season Saturday. The Lady Muleriders will have their senior ceremony at 12:50. Then they’ll tip off against Harding at 1:00. The Muleriders’ senior ceremony will be between games and then they’ll play Harding a little after 3:00. Both games will be broadcast live on Magnolia’s Country 99.1.

The SAU baseball team opened conference play with a 5 to 1 win Friday at Southeastern Oklahoma State. Mark Fontenot drove in three of SAU’s runs with a home run in the seventh inning. The Muleriders and Savage Storm wrap up the conference series with a doubleheader at noon Saturday in Durant, Oklahoma.

SAU softball is playing in the UAM 8-State Classic in Bentonville. They won both games Friday….6 to 5 over Northwest Missouri, and 14 to 5 over Central Missouri. SAU’s Maddie Down hit home runs in both games. Jill Roye and Megan Godoyo had 6 hits apiece on the day. Brooke Goad had 5 hits. Victoria Taylor recorded 12 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings of work. The Classic continues through Sunday in Bentonville; the Lady Muleriders play Fort Hays State at 1:00 Saturday and Missouri Southern State at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
