The Mt. Vernon Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 8 a.m. Friday to assist the Rudd’s Crossing Volunteer Fire Department on a barn fire at 1310 Columbia 27 South, near Waldo. A tractor and multiple bales of hay were reportedly on fire. Sheriff’s deputies gained entry to the closed side of the barn with a winch on a RAM patrol vehicle. Hay bales were then removed, spread and extinguished. The Waldo Fire Department and the Columbia County Firefighters Association tanker also assisted. Firemen were on the scene just over three hours.
