The Magnolia Panthers advanced and the Lady Panthers saw their season end Tuesday in the 5A South Basketball Tournament. The tournament is being played at Watson Chapel High School, in Pine Bluff.

In the girls’ game, De Queen edged Magnolia 55-52. Magnolia was led in scoring by Lillie Moore with 22 points and Kisi Young with 19. The Lady Panthers finished at 14 and 10 for the season.

In the boys’ game, Magnolia trailed White Hall 23 to 21 at the half, but the Panthers outscored the Bulldogs 32 to 8 in the second half, and Magnolia won by the final score of 53-31. The win puts the Panthers into the semi-finals of the tournament; it also clinches a berth in next week’s state tournament, which Magnolia is hosting. Greg Martin led Magnolia with 19 points and Trey Davis added 14 points. The Panthers are now 11 and 11 for the season. They play Hope at 8:00 p.m. Thursday.

 

The SAU basketball teams close out the regular season with games Thursday and Saturday in Oklahoma. Games begin at 5:30 Thursday at Southern Nazarene University and at 1:00 Saturday at Oklahoma Baptist. All of the games will be broadcast live on Magnolia’s Country 99.1.

 

SAU’s Maddie Dow is the Great American Conference Softball Player of the Week. Dow hit .615 (8-for-13) last weekend at the UAM Classic in Bentonville. She hit four home runs and had eight RBIs. Dow is NCAA Division II’s active career home run leader with 59. Dow and the Lady Muleriders begin conference play with a four-game series Friday and Saturday at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma.
